How much coverage does a 5G base station have?

How much coverage does a 5G base station have?

May 31, 2022

The construction of 5G networks has become the focus of the current work of the three major operators. In addition to the basic completion of coverage in first-tier cities, there are only a few pilots in third- and fourth-tier cities, which are still far from real large-scale commercial use. Operators and mobile phone manufacturers have their own purposes to promote 5G networks. One wants to promote their own 5G packages and the other wants to promote their own 5G mobile phones. Consumers need to be rational. I don’t know if you have noticed such a problem. The promotion speed of 5G network is far slower than that of 4G network at that time. This is mainly limited by the coverage of 5G network. How big is the coverage of 5G network?

According to relevant data, the coverage radius of the operator's 2G base station is about 5 to 10 kilometers, the coverage radius of the 3G base station is about 2 to 5 kilometers, the coverage radius of the 4G base station is about 1 to 3 kilometers, and the coverage radius of the 5G base station is about 100 to 300 meters. Through data comparison, you can clearly find such a problem, the distance covered by the communication network becomes shorter and shorter after the upgrade. Why would such phenomenon happen?

The higher the frequency band of the wireless signal, the higher the data bandwidth that can be transmitted, but the signal attenuation is also greater, and the penetration capability is lower. The following picture shows the coverage distance of 5G base stations tested by operators and netizens. Currently, 5G base stations in my country generally use Sub 6Ghz for construction, and the coverage of millimeter waves is even smaller than this distance. The coverage distance is also affected by subtle factors such as the height of the base station tower, power, and mobile phone antennas.

Achieving the same coverage of 4G base stations requires several times as many 5G base stations. What impact will this bring?

It is mainly reflected in two aspects. One is that it increases the difficulty of construction. The original 4G base station sites can no longer meet the construction needs of 5G base stations. This requires operators to coordinate more base station sites and enhance users' environmental awareness. It is easier said than done to build a new station, which is one of the reasons for the slow progress of 5G network; one is to increase the cost of investment. Fortunately, the three major operators are state-owned enterprises, and the huge investment in the early stage will not cause any profits and will not cause too much. Influence, it is unavoidable to build in different regions and batches, and it is impossible for operators to invest money without any plan.

5G base station, let the world have no blind spots, let everyone communicate without obstacles!
