How SUNCOMM Achieved 1KM Outdoor WiFi Coverage in Congo: A Real-World Case Study

Table of Content [Hide]

In rural and outdoor environments providing reliable internet connectivity is not simply a matter of having a fast internet connection.

The bigger challenge is often how to distribute that connection across a physical area.

This challenge becomes particularly important in regions where farms, resorts, construction sites, communities and other outdoor facilities may be spread across hundreds of meters or more.

In one of our field projects in Congo SUNCOMM tested its 1KM WiFi Coverage Kit in an open outdoor environment and successfully achieved approximately 1 kilometer of wireless coverage.

The project gave us an opportunity to look beyond the question of "How far can WiFi reach?”

    Instead we wanted to understand:

What actually makes a long-range outdoor WiFi solution work in the real world?

A Complete 1KM WiFi Coverage Solution

For this project SUNCOMM deployed its 1KM WiFi Coverage Kit as an integrated system.

Than treating the access point, RF cables and antenna as separate products the kit is designed as one matched wireless coverage solution.

    The system combines:

    1. WiFi 6 AX3000 wireless platform

    2. Matched low-loss RF connection

    3. Dual-band outdoor antenna

    4. 2.4GHz and 5GHz wireless coverage

    5. Long-range outdoor deployment capability

    This integrated approach is important.

In a long-range system changing one component can affect the performance of the entire RF chain.

For example an access point may have radio performance but unnecessary cable loss or an unsuitable antenna can reduce the effective signal reaching the coverage area.

That is why SUNCOMM approach is to treat the 1KM WiFi Coverage Kit as one system, rather than simply combining unrelated networking components.

Why Can the Kit Reach 1KM?

A common misunderstanding is that long-range WiFi is mainly about increasing transmit power.

In reality outdoor WiFi coverage is determined by factors working together:

Radio performance + antenna characteristics + RF connection + frequency + installation + environment

This is essentially a complete RF system.

For the Congo field test the open environment provided favorable propagation conditions.

With an installation position and clear outdoor propagation path the SUNCOMM 1KM WiFi Coverage Kit achieved approximately 1KM of wireless coverage during testing.

However this result should not be interpreted as a guaranteed distance in every environment.

Real-world coverage can vary depending on:

    1. Terrain

    2. Trees and vegetation

    3. Buildings

    4. Antenna installation height

    5. RF interference

    6. Client device capability

    7. Local regulations

    8. Network traffic

    9. Weather and environmental conditions

This distinction is important when evaluating any long-range WiFi solution.

    Why 2.4GHz and 5GHz Matter

The SUNCOMM 1KM WiFi Coverage Kit supports both 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi allowing the system to balance coverage and performance.

    2.4GHz

more suitable when longer propagation distance is important.

It can provide coverage in many outdoor environments and is often useful for extending connectivity over larger areas.

    5GHz

Generally provides available throughput and can offer more capacity in suitable environments.

However 5GHz signals are typically more sensitive to distance and physical obstacles.

This is why dual-band operation can be valuable in a network.

Of choosing between range and performance the network can use both frequency bands according to the actual application.

WiFi 6: Why Matters for Outdoor Coverage

Another important part of the solution is the use of WiFi 6 technology.

When discussing long-range WiFi it is easy to focus on distance.

Distance is only one part of the problem.

Imagine a site, resort or outdoor facility where dozens of users are connected simultaneously.

The network must not reach those users.

It must also manage resources efficiently.

WiFi 6 introduces technologies such as:

    1. OFDMA

    2. MU-MIMO

    3. multi-user efficiency

    4. Better utilization of wireless resources

These technologies can make a meaningful difference when an outdoor AP needs to serve multiple connected devices.

This is one reason SUNCOMM chose an AX3000-class WiFi 6 platform for the 1KM WiFi Coverage Kit.

The objective was not simply to achieve a long signal distance.

Our goal was to create a long-range WiFi network.

    Line of Sight Is Critical

One of the important lessons from outdoor WiFi deployment is the importance of line of sight.

A wireless signal traveling through a field is very different from one traveling through:

    1. Dense vegetation

    2. Concrete buildings

    3. Metal structures

    4. Hills

    5. Other physical obstacles

For a 1KM outdoor WiFi deployment, installation height and antenna positioning should therefore be considered carefully.

In applications placing the system at an elevated location can improve the propagation path and reduce obstacles.

    This is particularly relevant for:

    l Rural WiFi

    l Farm networks

    l Resorts

    l Construction sites

    l Campsites

    l compounds

Why We Designed the Product as a Complete Kit

This is an important point that we want customers and system integrators to understand.

At SUNCOMM we don't believe that long-range WiFi should be reduced to a specification such as:

    “1KM range.”

    The useful question is:

“What combination of hardware and deployment conditions can provide reliable coverage over a large outdoor area?”

This is why we developed the 1KM WiFi Coverage Kit as an integrated solution.

The AP, RF connection and antenna are intended to work as one system.

For installers and project customers this also makes deployment simpler.

    Of having to independently select:

    1. An outdoor AP

    2. A compatible antenna

    3. Appropriate RF cables

    4. Matching connectors

the customer can start with a pre-integrated long-range WiFi solution.

From Congo to Other Rural Connectivity Projects

The Congo field test is one example of where this type of solution can be useful.

The same concept can be applied to environments where conventional indoor WiFi is not enough.

l Rural WiFiExtend an existing internet connection across an outdoor area.

l FarmsProvide connectivity for workers, mobile devices, cameras and IoT equipment.

l ResortsExtend WiFi beyond buildings into gardens, recreational areas and outdoor facilities.

l Construction SitesCreate wireless coverage without installing large amounts of network cabling.

l Campsites and RV ParksProvide connectivity across larger open spaces.

l Industrial and Commercial SitesConnect outdoor working areas, storage yards and peripheral facilities.

    SUNCOMMs Perspective on Long-Range WiFi

Our experience from this project reinforced an idea:

Long-range WiFi is a system-design problem, not just a power problem.

A successful outdoor wireless deployment requires the interaction of:

    l WiFi technology

    l RF design

    l Antenna performance

    l Installation

    l Environment

When these factors are properly considered wireless connectivity can extend farther than most users expect from a conventional indoor router.

For SUNCOMM the purpose of the 1KM WiFi Coverage Kit is therefore not simply to put a "1KM" number on a product page.

It is to provide a integrated outdoor WiFi solution for large-area connectivity.

The Congo field project demonstrated that long-range WiFi can be a way to extend internet connectivity across large outdoor areas.

Using the SUNCOMM 1KM WiFi Coverage Kit as an integrated solution our field test achieved approximately 1KM of wireless coverage in an open environment.

    The result highlights a point:

Reliable long-range WiFi depends on the system not just the access point.

With WiFi 6 technology band wireless connectivity, optimized RF components, appropriate antenna design and proper installation outdoor WiFi can become a practical connectivity option for rural, commercial, industrial and recreational environments.

At SUNCOMM we will continue testing our solutions in real-world environments because field performance is ultimately more meaningful than a number, on a datasheet.
